easter lily

leather shoes, plaid trousers, and a knit vest. we were polished from head-to-toe and topped off with a dipetty-doo part in our hair. then, arranged in front of the azalea for a series of 3X5's to be forever stored in the coffee table drawer. quickly, we were shuffled into the wagon for the main event... church.

On the way, we carried with us a note of melancholy. There were no gifts or candy that we were so expecting after the week of song and lore building up to easter day. apparently, peter cottontail hippity hopped past our house that morning and bounced on down the bunny trail.

miraculously, upon our return home, we learned quickly that he had not forgotten us at all. our eyes filled with a spectacle of color. Jelly beans and chocolate supported magnificent cellophane structures. The candy was abundant and we spent the afternoon hunting out eggs.

i remember my pop buying a lily and a corsage for my mother to wear for every Easter Mass. and If my grandmother was visiting, she would get one too. now that we are grown and don't spend easters together like we used too, it feels good to think my mom is probably wearing her corsage.
